Good old Brunswick

Client: N/A

Title: Good Old Brunswick – Print

Brunswick, between the West and East and the running vein of Sydney road between, we had a place we loved and it was our home from home.

The thing about Brunswick which keeps it in my heart and gave me inspiration to draw this was the characters you talk with and see every time you step out of your front door. The Library and town hall, a central hub where the crossroad links the East and West of Brunswick. The Brunswick Baths where you can sit in the sauna and hear tales from each corner of the world. The cricket fields and Gilpin park oval, the old shopping districts of Union square contrasting with the ever changing shops popping up parallel to Barkly square. Brunswick never stops giving.

All of these characters do exist however no personal information is available or shared.

I will be running a limited print of 20 which will be available from 2020, please enquire via – contact@willbakerarts.com

This is my illustration of Brunswick, a thank you and a good bye to the people and the place, drawn between 2015-2017

Zindagi – Dr Sinha’s Jazz Lobotomy

Client: Dr Sinha’s Jazz Lobotomy

Title: Zindagi

Animated music video for the track “Zindagi” by Dr Sinha’s Jazz Lobotomy.

During a mini break in Japan I was contacted by Chinmay from DSJL who contacted me  about putting together an animated video for a experimental piece called Zindagi. Chinmay to his amazing credit is clearly a very visual person and to my joy he had already developed a storyboard he wanted us to develop. And so began the exploration of the music and Chinmay’s vision, which has become a piece which represents a journey through life, multi dimensional worlds and time. After several conversations we began developing a concept and it soon became clear that this wasn’t going to be a conventional animation, it was almost certainly going to be a new challenge for myself.

We present Zendagi, from Dr Sinha’s Jazz Lobotomy.

Melbournians please check them out.

Relationship animation – Melbourne Well-Being Centre

Client: Melbourne Well-Being centre

Title: Relationship’s animation

I love working on projects which I can learn from while I work on them. Hannah and Aaron from the Fitzroy based well-being centre had me over for a cup of tea to meet their cat and talk me through their idea.

As busy people, both working hard at the Melbourne well-being centre, they needed someone to come in and work with them on a animation that would promote their services. In once afternoon we sat down and came up with a strong yet simple storyline that focused on the key points they wanted to cover in the animated short. I suggested we break it up into four 10 second clips that they could then use across Facebook and Instagram, with the full version available at their website.

The animation discusses some of the most common traits in relationships and it suggests methods in addressing them in a positive way.

Learning everyday.

Western Health

Client: Western Health Melbourne

Title: Survey Cartoon

My final project before leaving Melbourne, in fact I was working round the clock while packing to finish these off in time but I have to say it was a pleasure and especially meeting the team at Footscray Hospital.

The brief was clear, “Every year we struggle to get our (hundreds of) staff to engage and participate in this mandatory survey”. This year we want to approach it in a different way and we we’re thinking a series of cartoons making light of the battle of Survey team, chasing staff up to complete the survey.

Working alongside Cathy and Susan was great, getting an insight of the different roles within the hospital was an eye opener, especially one trip down to the EA ward and getting an idea of where we could go in terms of humour gave me all I needed to produce this series. We’ve already began discussing future projects as the feedback has been positive and the cartoons and merchandise have become a hit.

Project Specifics:

  • Graphic design, cartoon illustration, typography
  • 2 week production

Dairy Extraordinary

Client: Dairy Extraordinary

Title: Food truck design

Beau and his team were looking for a new look to give their customers something to check out while they queue outside their Raclette food-truck. Working partially to exisiting graphics I wanted to bring an extra ‘cheesy look’ to the design, creating new typography and characters to make it very clear what was going on over here!

My idea was to illustrate a food fight between some ingredient-based characters, so we have burgers, chips and potatoes slinging cheese at one another. To accompany this we have the cheesy typography, hand drawn and developed for this project.

The feedback from Beau and his team has been amazing, ” It looks great and has boosted our sales significantly”

Project Specifics:

  • Graphic design, cartoon illustration, typography
  • 2 week production
  • Software: Illustrator, Photoshop

Blog: My year (in short)

Wednesday October 11th 2017 // “Credit where credits due” – Adam

My last post was in May 2016, between then and now is..well more than a year! In that time I have been getting my head down and working on some pretty cool projects, I’ve had my head down so much that I’m now worried I need to see a spine specialist.

During the middle of 2016 I worked with Hazel Key, a copywriter launching a new website, we put worked on a pretty cool animation together using some new styles and techniques I hadn’t used before. Then I was approached by Steph at Creativa, a studio in South Melbourne, together we produced some character based animations, then there was a biggy of a contract with Swinburne University, which has taken close to 7 months to produce a series of animations that focus on mental health, a real worthy project to be a part of and one that I’m pretty proud of.

Thats a very brief description of the work I’ve been doing, there was also some interesting discussions with the people at Scienceworks and a series of animations for that chocolatey cookie called Oreo, time was against me on these unfortunately and I had to fulfil my obligations elsewhere, however, good experience none the less.

There was also the Swift boys from back home, they are running a start up back where I was living before moving to Melbourne and we’ve worked together producing a lot of their branding and merchandise. Which leads me to offering credit to the stock image artists whom I used some of their assets, thank you to you.

The bird that could not fly – Mafalda Di Donato

Client: Mafalda Di Donato

Title: The bird that could not fly

The bird that could not fly is a children’s book written by Mafalda Di Donato, the story is a feel good story for all children as it illustrates that anything is possible when you believe in yourself and put in the hard work. Max is a 5 year old bird starting primary school in the town of Greenwood, in class Miss Rosie teaches the children how to fly. Unfortunately Max can’t seem to get it right as he keeps falling over and this makes him sad. Max tries to find a quick fix after visiting a witch doctor and fails miserably however, on the advice of his mother he begins to think he can and continues to practice and as a result he can now fly!

Mafalda found my illustrations through Instagram and after going through my portfolio found my style to suit the characters she wanted. I was asked to develop the original characters you will in this children’s book, a exercise I thoroughly enjoyed as I was granted complete freedom in these designs.

The book is now available to purchase online.

  • Cartoon/Illustration/Children’s illustration
